DofE Gold Walking is the most prestigious of the three levels and the most demanding to achieve. The Gold expedition is a more challenging adventure than Bronze and Silver and takes place across wilder terrain. The level of training is greater to ensure that all participants are equipped to cope with the more independent nature of the expedition.

Our offer is flexible, so speak to us if you have your own group equipment or you plan to do the training in school yourself and want a shorter expedition whilst meeting the training requirements. Also let us know if participants need personal equipment. An acclimatisation afternoon before the practice and qualifying expedition is included in this price to give participants time to arrive at the location and settle in. Alternatively, participants can arrive on the morning of both expeditions. School staff are not required on the expeditions but are very welcome if they would like to attend.

Acclimatisation Afternoon includes:

  • Team leader meets and greets participants at the train station or campsite
  • Review of navigation done at Bronze/Silver
  • Campcraft (putting up and striking tents)
  • Review of kit and rucksack packing

Practice expedition includes:

  • Review of navigation done at Silver
  • Route planning
  • Kit and rucksack check
  • Campcraft (putting up and striking tents)
  • Safe cooking on gas Trangia stoves
  • Emergency procedures
  • Extended navigation training
  • Remote supervision
  • Debrief in preparation for the qualifying expedition

Qualifying expedition:

Participants demonstrate the skills they have learned over a four-day assessment remotely supervised by a qualified assessor. The assessor writes up a report for each participant which is then uploaded to their eDofE account by Off Grid Adventures.

GOLD PARTICIPANT

Sir Thomas Riches’ School

I feel that Off Grid Adventures met our every need from training us to ensuring that the skills we acquired were relevant and lasting. I really enjoyed the fun, and excitable manner by which the instructors treated us. It made me feel part of a team rather than just some people doing it for an award. I also enjoyed how patient the instructors were with us, especially on the first few days when we were novices, and how they were able to explain tasks to us in digestible and clear ways, so we all had the skills we needed. Finally, the instructors were exuberant and overwhelmingly friendly towards us all, and always maintained a positive outlook: they clearly wanted to get to know us as people rather than just ‘more people doing an award’, and that shone through.
